The luckiest diabetic…

Posted by Bridget McNulty

My life motto is that I’m the luckiest girl in the world.

And I suppose that means I’m the luckiest diabetic in the world too! Most days, it feels like that. I was diagnosed late (at 25), so I feel I experienced all kinds of food (and sugar!) fully before diagnosis. I was old enough to realise how important it is to take care of yourself and your condition, and extremely lucky to meet an amazing dietician who gave me a great eating plan.

And most days, I feel really great. I have loads of energy, I eat well, I exercise, and I have superb HBA1c results. And then every so often, I have a diabetic day…
A day when I don’t feel particularly well, when I have no energy, when my blood sugar doesn’t toe the line. A day when it feels like a bit of a pain to have a chronic condition… for life. These are the days I know I’ll have on my trip, and I’m ready for them. I think it will be an extremely honest trip for me, and it will have to be, to show myself and other diabetics that it’s okay to have a bad day now and again, as long as you pick yourself up and keep heading for your dream – for what it is you really want to do with your life.

That’s why I want to go on this trip – to provide myself, and others, with the inspiration necessary to make it through diabetic days…
