Pismo Beach, Avila Beach & Shell Beach

We spent our last days of our journey at The Cliffs Resort in Shell Beach near the towns of Pismo Beach and Avila Beach – all three picturesque.
The hotel has 160 guest rooms and suites, featuring private balconies or patios, Italian marble baths, 42” HD flat screen televisions and other standard amenities, but be very specific about the view you’re requesting as the views are described as “breathtaking ocean, coastal, or mountain views” and the delineation is a bit amorphous. Marisol is their oceanfront restaurant . It has indoor and outdoor seating with sweeping views of the ocean. The menu has a Mexican flair, with a contemporary twist.
Our favorite town was Avila beach. Just fishing from the pier, we were surrounded by swooping Pelicans and seals who tried to steal our bait – a natural spectacle more than worth the $10 each it cost to rent a rod and reel.
The highlight for the kids, was clearly ATVing on the legendary sand dunes of Pismo Beach. We went to Angelo’s ATV, and the boys spent a half day skidding up and down enormous sand dunes, comparable in the United States only to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in Florence, Oregon. If ATVing isn’t your thing, sportfishing is big here.
