CAPE TOWN
Cape Town : Places to See

OUR TOP CHOICES
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

A trip up Table Mountain in the revolving cable car is a must for every visitor to Cape Town. Panoramic views over Cape Town, as far as the distant mountains and out over the ocean, as you smoothly and effortlessly ascend, are excelled only by the 360 degree views from the top, where you can choose to stroll around the winding paths admiring the view and the unique botanical species, set out for an energetic hike along the marked routes or simply relax in the café for breakfast, lunch, coffee or an ice cream. Capetonians take the ride up to treat themselves to breakfast (9:00am - 11:30am) or sundowners in this stunning and unique spot.

The vagaries of the weather mean that you should grab your chance of going whenever the day is clear. The cableway closes when the ‘tablecloth’ of cloud is down on the mountain and when strong winds are forecast. Check the website or ring this number to check weather, visibility and the daily status for the cableway.

Robben Island

A boat trip and tour of Robben Island is one thing you should do, if you want to understand the immediate history of South Africa. The prison island where Nelson Mandela spent many years as a political prisoner under the apartheid rule has been preserved as a museum, with informative tours led by former inmates.

It is strongly recommended that you book your trip to Robben Island well in advance, as there are limited places available on each boat trip.

If the weather doesn’t allow for the 30 minute boat trip, you can still visit the Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the Waterfront, which holds an excellent exhibition, giving an insight into the whole political significance of Robben Island.
  Cape Town, Two Oceans Aquarium
Two Oceans Aquarium

For light relief you could then pop into the Two Oceans Aquarium also at the Waterfront, to view the myriad of fish, seals and sharks in cleverly designed surroundings.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Far more than just botanical gardens, Kirstenbosch encapsulates the diversity of South Africa’s floral bounty in a stunning setting on the side of the mountain. Whether you visit to wander and look at the proteas and ericas, picnic and dangle your feet in a bubbling stream or set off on one of the hiking trails that take you around the back of Table Mountain, you’re sure to want to return for a second visit. The summer season of concerts brings Capetonians with picnic baskets flocking and the café and restaurant means you can easily spend a whole day there and leave feeling restored and refreshed.

For information on opening times and events, ring Kirstenbosch or check the website.
