Probably the fact that my civil engineer dad traipsed my family around South Africa so much when I was young is the reason that I seem to be incurably affected by the travel bug. Born in Kimberley in the Northern Cape, I spent some early years in Cape Town and then Johannesburg before moving back to Cape Town at age fourteen. My childhood meant that I was not only taught to get used to change, but to embrace it as a way of life.
After finishing school and university in Cape Town, I worked on a ski resort in Colorado for six months before embarking north on a road trip through the U.S. and Canada. After running out of money and making favourable dents in my credit card, I moved to London to pay it all off. While living there for four years, I worked for as an internet marketer and copywriter, mainly as an excuse to save money, travel and then write about it. During my time in the U.K., I interspersed tube commutes and dark winters with trips to Europe, South East Asia and South America. Eventually tiring of London (and clearly life, if the old saying is to be believed), I moved to San Francisco in 2006. While I’m not entirely sure how I ended up here, San Francisco has been for me an ideal base from which to explore the States.
Currently, I work as a freelance food and travel writer for several Bay Area publications including the Onion, 52 Perfect Days, Daily Candy and Citysearch. In between this and corporate copywriting work, I spend my days plotting weekend escapes to unexplored American destinations, as well as trips back to my home of all homes, Cape Town.
