After stints in both newspaper journalism and online content generation, I finally took a fifty percent paycut to dive into magazine journalism, and haven’t looked back since... I was simply too busy! In fact, in the past ten years, I’ve done everything from column writing to production, and from translating to editing – and every bit was part of a learning curve I’m most grateful for.

Highlights, so far, included being editor of publications such as Proud (for the Proudly South African initiative) and the Val de Vie glossy annual; and being features editor at Real Simple and even managing editor of the Afrikaans version of Seventeen ... Just to keep me young.

Taking my second big career plunge in 2008, I’ve been freelancing for the past three and a half years and it’s definitely the best job I’ve had to date. I get to do a variety of things in my own sweet time, and although mind-numbing copy editing and writing advertorials are the bread and butter of most freelancers’ existence, the ability and opportunities to travel at the drop of a hat is by far the biggest perk. I’m at my happiest with my backpack, my trusty camera, a map in hand and in a new place. And getting lost – which I often do – is just part of the pleasure of exploring.

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is a survival tip to dodge the post-trip blues, which inevitably kicks in the moment the plane touches down and you’re back in the rat race: Immediately book and start planning your next adventure the minute you get back.

And that’s exactly what I’m doing as we speak... So watch this space!
